Ballet des Amériques Presents "Conversation with Degas": Integrating History and Artistry into Conservatory Training

WHITE PLAINS, NYBallet des Amériques is proud to announce the premiere of "Conversation with Degas," an original ballet specifically developed by Director Carole Alexis to integrate a page of dance history and music appreciation into the conservatory curriculum.

The production serves as an introductory study of the work of French painter Edgar Degas. Moving beyond the traditional glamour of the stage, the choreography aims to enhance the imagination of the young dancer by focusing on the "colors" of the paintings of Degas and his fascination with the physical effort of the classroom. By highlighting the grit of the studio rather than just the finished performance, the students engage with the familiarity, comparison, and human side of their discipline.

The ballet is set to a score featuring composers of the period, such as:

  • Léo Delibes: Providing the classical structure and melodic foundation essential for technical conservatory training.

  • Jacques Offenbach: Offering the rhythmic variety and theatrical character of the Parisian stage.

"This project encourages students' curiosity and asks them to look beyond technique," says Carole Alexis. "By studying the era of Degas, Delibes, and Offenbach, our dancers gain a better understanding of the historical roots of their craft and the profound relationship between people, visual art, and movement."
